Minerals & Hard Water

Hard water issues can cause cloudy or foggy water stains on clean dishes, shower doors, and faucets. This water “hardness” results from abnormal amounts of calcium, magnesium or iron. Hard water produces two major problems:

  1. Scale- Scale forms when calcium and magnesium precipitate out of water and adhere to the insides of pipes, water heaters, tea kettles and more. If left untreated, scale can eventually completely clog water pipes, destroy fixtures and damage appliances.
  2. Scum buildup- Hard water reacts with soap to form sticky scum which reduces lather and wastes hand-washing and shower water.

*We recommend installing a top-quality water softener to treat hard water which will tangibly and undeniably improve your water quality.

The benefits of soft water:

  1. Softer Skin & Hair
  2. Brighter Clothes
  3. Uses Less Soap
  4. Makes Cleaning Easier/Less Household Cleaners Needed
  5. Reduces Spots on Dishes and Fixtures
  6. Extends Life of All Appliances and Hot Water Tanks
  7. Extends Fabric Life

Ion Exchange Systems (Water Softeners)

These hard water softeners eliminate hard water issues such as soap scum and scale on bathtubs and sinks, dull-looking laundry, spots on dishes and deposits on faucets, shower heads and inside water pipes and water heaters caused primarily by calcium and magnesium. ʺHardnessʺ actually describes the capacity of water to combine with soap and form scale on surfaces. Water containing up to 3.5 grains/gallon (60 milligrams per liter) is considered to be “soft” while moderately hard water has 3.5 to 10.5 grains/gallon (60 to 180 milligrams per liter). Very hard water contains 10.5+ grains/gallon (180 milligrams per liter).

How Hard Water Softeners Work

We install ion‐exchange water softener systems which substitute sodium or potassium salts for “hard water” minerals, increasing the level of these salts in the product water. If your primary water issue is scale buildup or water spots, softening hot water alone can effectively reduce these problems without increasing the salt content of your cold water used for drinking and cooking.

Effective at removing:

Primarily used for removal of calcium and magnesium.

May help with:

Iron, manganese and other metals; chlorine

May not remove:

Microbial contamination, sodium, nitrates, organic chemicals, radon
